Why use technology in the classroom?
I enjoy using technology in the classroom because I am trying to engage my students and “WOW” them. I am trying to get them interested in learning, spark their interests. Sometimes all it takes is showing them another perspective and I am rewarded with their words, “Oh, I get it!”
When I first started noticing computers being used in the classroom, all I saw was just a couple of computers off in the corner. They were used for drill or given time to ‘play’ on the computer if students had finished their work. Now I am noticing more teachers using blogs and websites to put their daily lessons on so that students who have been absent can look to see what they have missed. There are virtual field trips from across the world being conducted through Skype and Google Hangouts. Teachers are able to screen cast their lessons so students can go back to for reference as often as they need to master a concept. Organization of content is much easier. I place all my links on a spreadsheet and I am just a click away from my lesson.
I have found that technology does not always work in my classroom and sometimes things are not very smooth in transitioning from one concept to the next. I just smile those days and pretend the glitch in the system was in the lesson plan. My students live with frustrated and uptight adults that blow a fuse when something doesn’t work out the way that they want it. I want to model for them an adult that keeps their head together when the technology doesn’t work.
Why should I use technology in my classroom? Because it makes teaching a whole lot easier.
